What is Your Rock Band?

A friend at work today asked, “What is your rock band?” What she was getting at is along the lines of a motto or theme. Without much thought I said, “The Rollie Pollies.” Let’s face it, I can stand to drop a few. She shared hers, Badge Destroyers. Well, that one sounded better than mine. Someone else in the office said theirs was Maniacal Penguin and I thought that one was definitely cooler than mine. I have given this more thought and would like a do-over….or two.

In my life away from writing, I work in the field of human resources. For those of you who only know of HR when you need a form or have a benefits question my profession may seem uneventful. Let me tell you, this job is not for the faint of heart. Between investigations, mediations, strategic plans, employee engagement, leadership development, diversity, conflict resolution, recruitment, retention, and the list goes on and on – there is never a dull moment. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Truth is, I like a little variety and challenge in my work. So if I had a rock band for work I think it would be The Fixers (said in a very mysterious tone). Okay, perhaps I have been watching too much Scandal on T.V. and envy Olivia Pope’s wardrobe (not to mention the whole cute guy is a good guy/bad guy intrigue). Let me tell you, some investigations take serious skills to piece together; but I digress. Now, before all my HR colleagues jump all over me for this one, let me be clear. I don’t mean fix in the reactive sense – at least not most of the time. We work hard to “fix it” proactively so that we don’t have to reactively. Strong programs, policies, leadership, and a myriad of other strategies are an important “fix” for any organization to be successful. But that is a conversation for another day. Back to my rock band…

Home is another story. Monday – Thursday my rock band sounds more like Mommy and the Never Have Enough Time Street Band. It’s a race to cram everything in. Homework, dinner, baths, bedtime at a decent hour, the list is endless. But there are three little rockers at home that dance to a different band. And by different, I mean they change by the minute. There is Shorty and the We’re Not Sharing Gang. Then there is Big Girl Should Know Better and Trying Not to Do Homework Band. Not to be outdone by I’m Too Cute to Have to Clean My Room Rockers. No sooner do I get them back to their cute little selves and I start to hear The Whiners and the Pouters start the music mash-up medley of I Don’t Like This It’s Icky and my all time favorite It Looks Like Puke as I serve up dinner. I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve though – I am after all the mom. We retire Mommy and the Never Have Enough Time Street Band and sign on a new band, The No Dessert For You Divas (always wanted to be a diva). Now that is a band my kids relate to quickly. We have signed that band on for repeat performances.

The weekends are a different story. Some of my favorite bands play on weekends. We have The Not Getting Out of PJs Crew, Mommy and Super Dance Crew, The Sillies and the Giggles, Get Up and Get Out of Towners…you get the idea. Don’t get me wrong, my little rockers still bring their bands along. However, Mommy and Daddy are armed with caffeine and time. Little rockers beware.
